I’ve always been a huge Prince fan. His music, his style, his energy – everything about him is pure inspiration. As a doll artist for the American Black Beauty Doll Association (ABBDA), I usually have music playing while I’m stitching. One day, as one of Prince’s iconic songs filled my workspace, a spark of inspiration hit me.
Craft Fair Magic in Jack London Square
It was a beautiful day at a craft fair in Jack London Square, Oakland. Among the various handmade creations on display, my Prince doll stood proudly, dressed in his signature purple outfit. The doll captured Prince’s essence, from his famous curls to his impeccable style.
A woman walked by, her eyes immediately locking onto the Prince doll. She stopped in her tracks, and without a second thought, handed me her credit card. “I have to have that doll,” she said, her excitement palpable. In that moment, I realized the profound impact that art and music can have on people, bringing back memories and emotions.
The Royal Triad: The King, The Queen, and The Prince
Inspired by the overwhelming response, I decided to create more dolls representing iconic figures in music. Thus, the Royal Triad was born – The King, The Queen, and The Prince. These dolls celebrate the legacies of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Prince, each crafted with meticulous attention to detail and a lot of love.
