Celebrating diversity is an everyday thing for the American Black Beauty Doll Association (ABBDA). As Pride Month begins, we want to give a special pride shoutout to the Black and brown people fighting for equality every day. Pride Month celebrates moments in queer history that sparked activism and progress toward equality. However, many defining moments were made possible by Black and brown LGBTQ+ activists fighting for their liberation.
The first LGBTQ+ Pride commemorated the Stonewall riots, which largely involved Black and brown LGBTQ+ individuals. Activists like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Stormé DeLarverie were pivotal in these movements.
Highlighting the Black and Brown Stripes
The Philadelphia Pride Flag, introduced in 2017, includes black and brown stripes to represent people of color (POC). These colors highlight the often-overlooked contributions of POC in the LGBTQIA+ movement. POC have been the driving force behind many key moments in the fight for equality. Recognizing their role is crucial, especially as society continues to acknowledge the importance of their contributions. The black and brown stripes also honor those living with HIV/AIDS and the stigma they face.

Dolls Celebrating LGBTQ+ Icons
Fashion dolls like Barbie have become a medium to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. Dolls inspired by influential figures such as Laverne Cox, the first transgender Barbie, bring visibility to the LGBTQ+ community and inspire the next generation. These dolls are a testament to the power of representation and the importance of celebrating every individual.
